Port Scanner

A port scanner is the software that searches a host for open ports. They can be used for good as when administrators verify their own network or they can be used for evil, to find vulnerabilities and eventually to gain unauthorised access. A quick way to check the localhost for open ports is to do: netstat -a and all ports which appear in LISTEN status, are opened. Please notice that some ports may be opened only on the local interface (127.0.0.1) and may not be opened on your real IP (on your IP over the Internet which anyone can access).

There are 65535 diferent and usable port numbers. Most services have default ports: 80 for httpd, 21 for ftpd, 25 for sendmail, etc. If you run Linux you can see a list in /etc/services .

Probably the best program that you can use to make port scans, is nmap. It is open source and you can use it for free. It can be downloaded from http://www.insecure.org/nmap . It has a lot of advanced options but still it's easy to use for beginners too.
