about adware
A software application that can display advertising banners while the
program is running or via some other triggering mechanism is called
adware. Ad delivery systems are most often integrated into free
applications as a way for developers to recover costs or generate revenue.
Some are distributing free screen savers, but after you install them, from
time to time you may notice some popups or other form of advertising.
Actually the adware term goes beyong and most of the free software
contains adware. Here are some more
examples of adware:
Google toolbar - it helps you block some popups but it wants you to
use only google for searches, a sort of making google absolete so only
google will make money from advertising.
Yahoo toolbar - it helps you get rid of some adware, but it does
the same as google toolbar: it wants you to use yahoo for searches so
yahoo will make money from advertising listings.
So strictly thinking, if google&yahoo toolbars steal a part of your
browsing space and add a toolbar with a search option, are they or not
adware? yes they are, but they are not so intrusive as others.
